Introduction

We will pause our current study to observe our annual Missions Emphasis Week. Our guest, missionary Michael Carlyle, will preach in the worship service and present an update on his ministry during the Family Bible Hour.

The theme that runs through our hymn selection is the “tongue.” Like Paul, our tongues must not be silent. We must speak the gospel message. One hymn we will sing uses the word tongue with a different meaning: language. The goal of our speaking is that people from every tongue will join us in the worship of our great Savior.

Hymn 27     Mighty God, While Angels Bless Thee

Notes:  It is amazing to consider that we mortals have the privilege of joining the angels to proclaim the praise of our mighty God. In view of Christ’s “free redemption,” we resolve to engage in the mission: “Break, my tongue, such guilty silence.” “Silent I can never be, for salvation’s wondrous story . . . .”

Note:  We ask the Father to assist us as we proclaim “the glories of [our] God and King.”  So great is our message that one tongue cannot do it justice. Oh, that we each could have a thousand tongues to proclaim the praises of our Savior! (We will sing this hymn to the tune AZMON, p. 70).

Note: Paul came to Corinth during his second missionary journey. The Lord appeared to him in a vision to strengthen him and embolden his speech as he proclaimed “Christ and him crucified.”

Notes: The hope of God’s people is anchored to God’s promised King. One day Jesus’ kingdom will “stretch from shore to shore.”  In anticipation of his return, we proclaim Christ throughout the world, knowing that one day, “People and realms of every tongue” will join us in the glorious praise of Christ. “Let every creature rise and bring honor and glory to our King.”
